Welcome to ESPNscrum's live commentary on England v Scotland at Twickenham. The wait (and national anthems) are over - we've already had one cracker between Wales and Ireland this afternoon - will this be a second Saturday stormer? Here we go ...
1 |
Finn Russell gets us underway in the Calcutta Cup and it's a confident catch from Haskell. Luther Burrell breaks away and he's almost there, but Scotland's last line of defence, Stuart Hogg, somehow holds firm. Great start from England.
2 |
Scotland penalty given for obstruction by referee Romain Poite - Russell kicks into touch.
4 |
5 - 0 |
Good movement from Haskell and Mike Brown, before George Ford finds space on the edge of Scotland's 22 ...
5 |
7 - 0 |
TRY ENGLAND! Ford offloads to Jonathan Joseph, who skips brilliantly around Hogg before diving over the line. Ford converts, just - the ball clipping the upright and bouncing through. England looking very comfortable in this opening 10 minutes.
8 |
Dominant scrum from England, but Burrell is penalised for not rolling away after a crunching tackle on David Denton.
10 |
Ford again peels away and finds space before offloading to Jack Nowell, who almost finds a way through on the far side before Dougie Fife brilliantly stops the England winger in his tracks.
11 |
Cries of 'Swing Low' from the Twickenham crowd before Brown and Hogg exchange high kicks. Brown takes the return brilliantly and offloads - we're locked at half way.
13 |
Nowell has seen plenty of the ball already: He again makes headway on the far side and Ben Youngs eventually finds Mike Brown, who bursts through and looks set to go over, only for another superb last-ditch tackle from Hogg.
14 |
Scotland turned the ball over but, attempting to kick out from behind their own try line, England's pressure takes a toll and we've got the scrum five yards out.
16 |
Joe Marler penalised for not driving straight in the scrum. One feels that is a let off for Scotland - and England really should have nailed that advantage.
18 |
Again, England should really be further ahead - Nowell gets away but trips over his own feet and falls straight into the arms of Hogg. Lapse of concentration from Ford but Scotland can't prosper.
21 |
7 - 5 |
Stuart Hogg has been a shining light in an otherwise dull Scotland performance thus far. Three key tackles as last man when, really, England should have made it count.
22 |
7 - 7 |
TRY SCOTLAND! With virtually their first attack of the match, Scotland go over. Mark Bennett gets the ball on the far side, dances through two attempted tackles and dives across the line. Greig Laidlaw converts and we've got a level game at Twickenham.
25 |
10 - 7 |
George Ford restores a three-point lead for England with a penalty. Straight through the posts, no issues with that one.
28 |
England's tackling has been flimsy so far. A few errors and a few lapses of concentration, but take nothing from that Scotland try - well-worked.
29 |
10 - 10 |
The ball is nearly down on England's try line - great drive from Scotland but they just can't get the ball down. Laidlaw weighs up his options and Dan Cole is far too keen - completely ignoring the fact the Scottish fly-half had five seconds. Penalty Scotland - and we're level again.
30 |
Cole a little lucky to avoid a yellow card for his eagerness in the ruck. Superb attack from Matt Scott and Fife.
32 |
Anthony Watson bursts through and he thinks he's scored for England - but referee Poite brings it back for a forward pass from Ford to Burrell in the build-up. Good move, but right call.
34 |
Scotland edge ever closer to England's try line but good work from Chris Robshaw earns the home side a penalty - given for not releasing - to relieve the pressure.
36 |
Jim Hamilton comes off injured for Scotland and is replaced by Tim Swinson.
37 |
Tommy Seymour breaks through and is all but inches away from giving Scotland the lead - but Brown makes a superb last-ditch tap-tackle.
38 |
10 - 13 |
England have had all the early play - but it's Scotland who lead. Another Laidlaw penalty, given for the advantage after a free-flowing move was brought back.
40 |
Scotland haven't won at Twickenham for 32 years - but they're half way there now. It's half-time and they're 13-10 in front.
40 |
Back underway at Twickenham - Nowell almost finds his way through on the near side but gives away the knock on after juggling the ball. The biggest danger for England is crumbling under pressure, as Wales did during the opening Six Nations clash in Cardiff. That must seem so long ago for Stuart Lancaster and Co now.
43 |
17 - 13 |
England deep in the Scotland 22 - with a penalty advantage...the pressure is mounting. TRY ENGLAND! Brown and Nowell both run into blue shirts when five metres from the tryline. However, Ford gets the ball and fakes a pass before running directly under the posts. Easily converted.
46 |
Scotland give possession away as Robshaw pounces on the loose ball. One can imagine a few harsh words being said by Lancaster at half time. Whatever was said, it appears to have had the desired effect. Nowell fumbles a loose one - his only noticeable mistake so far this game.
50 |
20 - 13 |
Ford moves England seven points in front with another penalty. Tom Youngs and Geoff Parling are both on for England. Finn Russell's kick from the restart goes straight out of play - horrid mistake.
53 |
Another penalty England from the resulting scrum - Scotland not driving straight. England's lineout is messy but they still have the ball inside the Scotland 22.
54 |
It's turned over, but Russell's kick is straight to Mike Brown and England are pressurising again. However, Lawes is penalised this time for coming in at the side.
55 |
Probably not a moment Tom Youngs will want to see again - great ball inside from George Ford, who is having a stormer, and Youngs breaks through the middle, only to throw the ball back to Bennett without really looking to see who was there.
58 |
Anthony Watson the latest to break through the Scottish back line - he can't get past Hogg, though. Could maybe have offloaded to Burrell, but possibly didn't spot him there.
60 |
Blair Cowan with some gutsy work on the floor to win Scotland the penalty under pressure. Seven-point game heading into the last quarter...
61 |
Ten line breaks for England so far - but only two tries to show for it. Second half much like the first...
62 |
Mike Brown is free, clear and over the line - but Poite has called it back for an apparent forward pass from James Haskell. TMO confirms it and we've got the scrum at 42 metres.
64 |
Boos sound around Twickenham but Brown and Haskell's reaction said it all afterwards. The ball was so far forward.
65 |
No need for Haskell to do that either. It didn't look like Brown had overran it. Dan Cole was chuckling on the big screen while we waited for the TMO.
68 |
This game is in the balance - England have butchered so many try-scoring opportunities. Lancaster's men could be pushing the 50-point mark - instead, Scotland are still in this.
69 |
Finn Russell feels a big hit from Courtney Lawesn and Mark Bennett's eventual offload goes out on the far side.
70 |
Scotland replacement Greig Tonks spills one, but again England fail to capitalise. Geoff Cross is called offside and England are rewarded with a cheap penalty. Line out deep in Scottish territory - but again it's loose. Very bitty stuff from England.
75 |
25 - 13 |
Penalty England - but Ford this time clatters the post. The hosts pick up the scraps and Vunipola is battering his way to the line.
76 |
TRY ENGLAND! In the aftermath of Ford's missed penalty, England eventually work the ball wide for Jack Nowell to just get over and seal the victory - Nowell finally produces the finishing touch after another committed display. Ford misses the conversion.
80 |
Knock on - and that's the end of it all! The Calcutta Cup will be heading to England...
