Profile

The controversial hooker made his debut for France against Romania in 1995 and won the last of his 10 caps on Les Bleus' tour to Australia in 2002.

He began his career with Tarbes Pyrénées before switching to Montferrand with whom he won the European Shield in 1999. He joined English side Gloucester in 2000 for the first of two spells that included victory in the Premiership play-off final in 2002.

He returned to Clermont Auvergne (who changed their name from Montferrand in 2004) for the 2003-04 campaign before switching back to the West Country the following season and sharing in their European Challenge Cup success in 2006.

Azam's agressive approach has frequently led to run-ins with the sport's judiciary. He was banned for eight weeks in 2002 after being found guilty of spitting and fighting with Newcastle's Epi Taione but he was cleared of alleged racial abuse.

In May 2009 he was hit with a nine-week ban for eye-gouging Cardiff Blues' Jamie Roberts in the 2009 Anglo-Welsh Cup Final and in October the same year he was banned for 12 weeks after being found guilty of kicking Saracens' lock Steve Borthwick in the head during their Guinness Premiership clash.

In May 2011 he reitred after being released by Gloucester, taking up a position as forwards coach with Top 14 side Toulon.
