Wasps flanker Tom Rees has suffered a fresh blow in his battle for fitness that is set to rule him out of England's November internationals.

The 25-year-old suffered a shoulder injury in April and had been hoping to make a return to action this month but his Premiership club have revealed he has reached "a plateau in his rehabilitation" and may require another operation.

The Wasps skipper, who won the last of his 15 caps against New Zealand last year, is due to see a specialist next Wednesday when a decision on how to proceed will be taken with surgery likely to add several months to his recovery period.

Rees was a member of England manager Martin Johnson's squads for the 2008 and 2009 Six Nations but was ruled out of the latter with a knee injury. He suffered the shoulder injury during his side's Premiership clash with Bristol and it subsequently ruled him out of England's tour to Argentina and the British & Irish Lions trip to South Africa.

His Wasps team-mate Joe Worsley filled the openside flanker berth for much of the 2009 Six Nations and impressed despite rarely featuring in that position on the domestic stage. Leicester's Lewis Moody and London Irish's Steffon Armitage are also in line for a possible recall ahead of England's clashes with Australia (November 7), Argentina (November 14) and New Zealand (November 21).

In related news, Wasps and England lock Simon Shaw is recovering well from a stress response to a metatarsal injury and is expected to resume full training next week.
