Australia legend Chris Latham will leave Worcester Warriors at the end of the season to return home with his family.

The veteran fullback, who has 78 Test caps to his name, will not be taking up the option of a third season with the Guinness Premiership side and announced his decision through a fan's forum.

There remains speculation that Latham may take up a contract in Japan but he confirmed that his playing future had not been finalised.

"After much consideration we feel, as a family, that this is the right time to return home to Australia, with my daughter starting high school and my son soon to start school," he said. "I am fully committed to the rest of the season and looking forward to making sure Warriors fulfil their goals and make the top six in the Guinness Premiership.

"On a personal level, I am looking to continuing to play consistent rugby and a big role for the club."

Worcester director of rugby Mike Ruddock paid Latham a glowing tribute. The club have the luxury of time in finding a suitable replacement and will doubtless also be boosted by a drop in their wage bill.

"We would like to place on record our thanks to Chris for his magnificent service to the Warriors during the last two seasons," he said. "Chris has been inspirational, and his work ethic has been truly remarkable. Having had the opportunity to work with him first-hand, I can see why he was by far the best fullback in the world for so many years."
