Robbie Deans is keeping his Wallabies on edge prior to their first Tri-Nations game against South Africa on July 24, with no player guaranteed a starting berth.

The former Crusaders boss has often turned to youth during his time in charge and could be disguising another selection curve ball as he looks to derail the Springboks.

Much of the media attention has focused on the possible selection of uncapped Reds centre Anthony Faingaa outside Quade Cooper and Will Genia, and in place of Matt Giteau or Berrick Barnes.

The trio have run together during training but Waratahs lock Dean Mumm, who had a below-par June series, has revealed that the uncertainty is a factor for every member of the squad.

''As far as we're concerned, every position is open. Obviously those with the physical mindset, knowing that is what Robbie wants, are going to get the positions,'' Mumm told The Sydney Morning Herald.

''There is an edge at training, because everyone is vying for positions, and each day they have been using different combinations. So you just work hard, and provide the edge for you to get that spot.

''I also know that I probably didn't create enough for myself in those June Tests. There were opportunities where I needed to have a higher work-rate early in certain areas to create opportunities for myself. So that's what I have targeted. It gives me something to think of, and something to work for at every training session.''
