Limerick born and a product of the Munster academy, Cronin emerged as an international quality hooker during a spell with Connacht. Having briefly represented his home province on a development deal and turned out for All-Ireland side Shannon, Cronin was snapped up by Connacht in 2008.
Blessed with a good turn of pace and a strong carrying game, he progressed from Ireland 'A' honours to full Test level with a debut against Fiji in 2009, a move he followed up with a first international start on tour to New Zealand in June 2010. In January 2011, Cronin announced that he would be leaving Connacht for their Irish rivals, Leinster.
Following an impressive end to the season, Cronin received a call-up to the Irish squad for the World Cup. He played twice in New Zealand, in the wins against Russia and Italy. After the World Cup he made his Leinster debut against Edinburgh and finished the season with 21 appearance in all competitions. In the Heineken Cup final win over Ulster he came off the bench to score one of four tries.
At the end of the 2011/12 season he was part of the Ireland squad that toured New Zealand and he came off the bench in two of the Tests. He continues to be a part of the Ireland squad and was included in the squad for the autumn international series.
