Greig Laidlaw has been named Edinburgh captain for the forthcoming RaboDirect Pro12 season.

The 25-year-old, comfortable at scrum-half and fly-half, takes the reins from back-rower Roddy Grant, who has been retained as the side's vice captain.

Laidlaw won his second Test cap for Scotland in their Rugby World Cup warm-up victory over Ireland last weekend, having played for Edinburgh 86 times since 2006.

"My preference as a coach is that our captain, and players that are in positions to lead, do so by example. I've always found that's the best way of creating a winning environment and producing positive results," Edinburgh boss Michael Bradley said.

"Greig has trained fantastically well with Scotland and if he's selected to travel to New Zealand with Scotland then Roddy has the experience and ability to step in and lead our team. It's a good position for Edinburgh to be in, to have two guys of that sort of calibre."

Laidlaw added: "This will be my sixth season at the club and I've enjoyed becoming the player I am today. I've enjoyed the hard work and feel that my strength and speed in particular have improved and game management has come on massively.

"A the moment I'm concentrating fully on the Rugby World Cup and working hard to make it to New Zealand so I can showcase what I can do for Scotland and return to Edinburgh as captain."
