The Ospreys' summer signing Aaron Jarvis will sit out the opening weekend of the RaboDirect Pro12 season after suffering an ankle injury.

The prop sustained the knock during pre-season training and was set to feature in the Ospreys front-row against Leinster in their season opener due to the likes of Paul James and Adam Jones expected to be named in Warren Gatland's final 30-man squad for the World Cup. Jarvis, who joined the Welsh side from Aviva Premiership side Bath, is hoping to be back in the reckoning in the early weeks of the season.

Head physio at the Ospreys Chris Towers explained Jarvis' injury saying: "Aaron suffered an ankle injury in training two weeks ago, with some ligament damage occurring. We've currently got him in a boot in order to protect the ankle and allow the injury to heal and settle.

"We're working on the principle that he'll be available again around the six week mark and that although he will miss the first game against Leinster, he will possibly be available for either the Edinburgh or Treviso games in the following two weeks."

Jarvis is joined at the Liberty Stadium by fellow new signings No.8 George Stowers and former Crusaders half-back Kahn Fotuali'i.
