The Newport Gwent Dragons have confirmed lock Luke Charteris as their captain for the forthcoming season.

The Wales international will miss the opening part of the campaign while on World Cup duty in New Zealand but head coach Darren Edwards says the 6ft 9in giant is the right man to lead the region. "Luke's attitude and leadership have been outstanding during his career at the Dragons."

"He has a fantastic work ethic and the respect of the whole camp. Luke's position here was secured before the Welsh squad for the World Cup was announced.

"Although he is going to be absent for the first few weeks of the season, we were confident that he is the man for the job and are delighted that he will be leading the Dragons this season."

Kiwi hooker Tom Willis has been named as skipper while Charteris is away. And the Dragons start their RaboDirect PRO12 campaign this weekend with the daunting task of an away trip to Munster on Saturday.
