Ulster made it two wins from two in this season's RaboDirect PRO12 with a hard-earned 25-19 victory over Aironi at the Stadio Luigi Zaffanella on Saturday afternoon.

Fresh from their opening-day defeat of Glasgow in Belfast, Ulster began brightly in sunny Viadana and took command of the contest with tries from winger Ian Whitten and lock Dan Tuohy either side of a penalty from Aironi fly-half Naas Olivier.

However, former Munster No.8 Nick Williams crashed over for the hosts just after the half-hour mark and Olivier converted before adding a penalty soon after to put Aironi 13-12 ahead. It was Ulster, though, who led at the break courtesy of a penalty right on half-time from fly-half Ian Humphreys.

The boot of Olivier edged Aironi back in front six minutes after the restart but Ulster replied with a third try, this time from Craig Gilroy, to reclaim the initiative. Humphreys added the extras and then landed a penalty to put Ulster 25-16 ahead. The province then lest Jerry Cronin to the sin bin but even though Olivier slotted another penalty moments later, the Italians were forced to settle for a losing bonus point.
