Munster have unveiled Canterbury's Rob Penney as their new head coach.

Penney has experienced huge success at Canterbury where he scooped four successive ITM Cups from between 2008 and 2011. Penney also boasts Super Rugby experience after acting as assistant coach to Robbie Deans with the Crusaders in 2005.

The 48-year-old will coach the New Zealand Under-20 side in the 2012 Junior World Championships in South Africa this summer and will then link-up with his new side on a two-year deal, subject to a work permit.

Penney was believed to be part of a three-horse race for the Munster job with former All Blacks centre Tana Umaga and ex-Munster forward Anthony Foley both in the frame to replace the outgoing Tony McGahan. But Foley will remain as forwards coach and Munster have also said that further change within the backroom staff will occur once Penney has arrived.

Munster's CEO Garrett Fitzgerald said of the appointment: "We conducted a thorough search to find a replacement for Tony McGahan and were delighted with the calibre of the candidates. Rob Penney's record speaks for itself and we look forward to welcoming him to Munster."
