The Ospreys have been dealt a big blow on the eve of the new RaboDirect PRO12 campaign with the news that Ryan Jones will miss the start of the season.

The former Wales captain has undergone surgery on his knee after aggravating an old injury during pre-season training with the Swansea-based region and is expected to be sidelined for six weeks.

As a result the 31-year-old is unlikely to come into contention until the Ospreys' fifth PRO12 game of the season against Munster at the Liberty Stadium on September 29. His injury will also be a cause for concern for Wales boss Warren Gatland given his form last season but he should still be fit for the opening autumn international against Argentina at the Millennium Stadium on November 10.

The Ospreys' head physio Chris Towers, said: "After undergoing investigation and bearing in mind where we are in the season, it was agreed that the best course of management was for Ryan to have some minor keyhole surgery.

"The early prediction sees him back available around the six week mark."
