Ospreys and Wales centre Andrew Bishop has been found guilty of assaulting a man during a night out in Cardiff last month.

The 27-year-old, who won the last of his 17 Test caps against the Barbarians in June, admitted the charge and was ordered to pay a fine and £500 in compensation to his victim who required eight stitches having been punched in the face during what was described as an "unprovoked attack".

The Ospreys have since revealed that they will be conducting an internal investigation into the incident in line with their disciplinary procedures. "Following Andrew Bishop's appearance at Cardiff Magistrates Court on a charge of common assault yesterday and the completion of the legal process the Ospreys can confirm that, in line with our internal disciplinary procedures, we will be undertaking a thorough investigation of the circumstances surrounding events on the morning of 20th August," the club said in a statement.

The Guardian reports that Cardiff magistrates heard how Bishop was "intoxicated" having visited a few establishments with some Ospreys team-mates. He initially denied the assault but later admitted his guilt having been captured on CCTV cameras.

Bishop's lawyer, Stuart Hutton, said his client "enormously regretted" the incident, adding that he is "mild, polite and regarded as a gentleman who breaks up arguments on the rugby pitch".

Bishop, who admitted common assault and was ordered to pay £1,065 including a £465 fine and £500 compensation to the victim, Allan Hornsey, commented: "What happened does not represent the person I am. I have endeavoured to conduct my life with integrity and stand by values which are important."
