Wales have been given a massive boost ahead of the Six Nations with the news that George North will be fit for their opening clash with Ireland on February 2.

The Scarlets have confirmed the winger will return to action in the next fortnight and may even be ready for this weekend's Heineken Cup clash at Leinster. Though, he is more likely to return against Clermont Auvergne the following weekend.

North suffered a heavy blow during the Scarlets' RaboDirect Pro12 clash defeat to Ulster on Friday and was taken to hospital for head and neck scans. The match had to be halted for six minutes while the young winger received treatment and there were fears he had suffered a serious injury.

But the scans showed no serious damage and North is set to get plenty of time on the pitch in the lead up to Wales' Six Nations defence.

Scarlets medical chief Andrew Walker told Walesonline: "George's symptoms were as if he had a serious spinal injury so we always take the precautionary route in those cases.

"He was put on a spinal board as a precaution. Fortunately, the scan and x-rays he had were clear so we are just dealing with some soft tissue trauma at the moment.

"Whether he turns around for this week is a possibility. We haven't ruled him out yet. We'll see how he goes in the next few days."
