The Glasgow Warriors have received a huge blow ahead of next season with the news scrum-half Niko Matawalu is out for "several weeks" after breaking a metatarsal in his right foot during pre-season training.

The Fijian No.9 has undergone an operation on the foot while the Warriors have confirmed Peter Horne has had his ACL reconstruction operation and has started his rehabilitation. Glasgow Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend said: "We're naturally disappointed that Niko will miss the start of the season.

"He brings so much to the squad both on and off the pitch and we wish him well in his recovery. Chris [Cusiter[ is scheduled to return to full training within the next couple of weeks and I've been really pleased with how Ali [Price] has adapted to our training, since he joined us a few weeks ago. Along with Henry [Pyrgos], who is coming off the back of an excellent season with Glasgow and Scotland, there will be good competition for the number nine jersey this season."
