Fans brave cold to secure final tickets

Queuing for more than 13 hours under the stars has paid off for hundreds of Wellington rugby fans as they braved a chilly night to secure Super Rugby final tickets.

The queue for the second allocation of tickets for Saturday's final between the Highlanders and Hurricanes stretched hundreds of metres from the entrance of Te Papa to around the waterfront on Wednesday morning.

The first allocation sold out in less than a minute on Monday afternoon, leaving many frustrated. About 2000 tickets were being made available to walk-up buyers at 8am on Wednesday. The first person reportedly began queuing at 5pm on Tuesday.

Hurricanes fans Carl Van Vlerken and Greg Nicholl turned up at midnight after spending 90 fruitless minutes trying to buy tickets online. "It's been crazy, the majority of people around here have been here since 12," said Van Vlerken.

David Cassie was one of two Highlanders fans near the front of the queue after getting there at 6.30pm on Tuesday. The ribbing they got overnight was all in good fun and the cold night wasn't too bad. "We studied in Otago, we are used to that no heating ... it didn't hit negative temperatures."

Those near the front of the queue were assured of getting tickets, but for Kapiti Coast's Ian Pincott it was less sure as he joined the end of the queue just before 8am. "No chance, but you never know ... I'll take a punt if it comes off well and good I'm going to the final, if not there's always the pub."

Another 3000 tickets will be made available online.
