Wales captain Sam Warburton faces a minimum of four weeks out with an ankle injury he picked up in the Cardiff Blues' defeat at the Ospreys last Saturday.

Warburton picked up a 'grade two' ankle sprain against the Ospreys and his regional side Cardiff Blues confirmed he faces at least four weeks out.

Blues head coach Danny Wilson said: "We are hoping it is a four-week lay-off and Sam is a great professional who will work hard to get himself back as quick as possible."

There is a tentative hope he will be fit to face the Scarlets on New Year's Day but that depends on the prognosis delivered by the specialists when Warburton visits them next week. The worst-case scenario, at this stage, would see him sidelined for six weeks.

It was just his third match for the Blues this season due to his Rugby World Cup duties with Wales. Despite the injury setback, Warburton stands a good chance of being fit for Wales' Six Nations opener against Ireland on February 7.
