Munster centre James Downey is tipped for a move to France after being told he is surplus to requirements in head coach Anthony Foley's new regime.

Downey has endured a mixed few weeks, having been dropped from the squad that faced Leinster in March, only to be returned to the starting XV against Toulon in today's Heineken Cup clash. But Downey now knows today's trip to France is unlikely to be his last.

Explaining his situation at Munster, Downey told the Daily Mail: "Look, it's just the way it is. They were looking at things financially, and I spoke as well.

"Absolutely, I'd love to play abroad again and it was great before for me personally. It made me, going over to England [with Northampton Saints]."

Although Downey was coy about his exact destination next season, he let slip that he is brushing up on his French. "Nothing's confirmed," he explained. "I don't know what the story is yet but hopefully I'll get something sorted in the next couple of weeks. We'll see what happens

"I've a bit of Leaving Cert French so I'll have to get going again. I'll be listening to it when I'm driving to Dublin and stuff. I have the French tapes in the car."
