Daniel Ricciardo is confident Red Bull will return to being the best of the rest behind Mercedes at this weekend's British Grand Prix despite its struggles in Austria two weeks ago.

Ricciardo could only manage eighth place after qualifying fifth in Austria, as Mercedes-powered cars dominated the top ten. After investigating the reasons for the lack in pace, Ricciardo said Red Bull could aim much higher at Silverstone.

"We definitely hope so," he said. "In Austria we didn't really get it working. We lost time in the straights, but also in the flowing high-speed corners we didn't really make up the time. I think we know why and if we can have the strong package that we have normally in the high-speed stuff here it can definitely bring us close to the other teams.

"All going well, I think we should be the ones behind Mercedes. I think they will still be quickest, but whether that's 0.5s or just a 0.2s, we are yet to find out. If we can get it all right we'll be 0.2 or 0.3s off them, all going well."

Ricciardo said the hot temperatures caught Red Bull out in Austria as it struggled to get the tyres working.

"The temperatures changed quite a lot over the weekend and I think from Friday to Sunday it got a lot warmer. Track temperature changes had an impact and we learnt from that because it didn't do what we expected them to do, let's say. It was probably just as much a factor as the nature and the layout of the circuit itself."
