Sharks keen for Cueto to prolong career

Sale Sharks boss Steve Diamond has revealed Mark Cueto could play on beyond the end of this season.

Cueto's contract is up at the end of the current campaign and reports suggested he was ready to hang up his boots in the summer. But Cueto has started the 2013-14 season in a rich vein of form scoring two tries in the Sharks' first three games.

And Diamond is hopeful Cueto will prolong his stay at the Sharks. Diamond told the Manchester Evening News: "The first thing to remember is that Cuets has never said to me or any of the coaches here that it's his last year. If he keeps playing like he played at the end of last year and he has scored two tries already this season then why would we not want him to carry on?

"He's moved to the centre which hasn't been by design but by default but with his experience he has come in and he's done a great job and if I was Cuets I'd be looking for another year if he can keep that form up. Let's have it right - he's never really relied on pace but if he can keep up his skill-sets why would you not look to keep on somebody who has been at the club for 13 years and still warrants his place on merit and is a great leader and ambassador for the club?

"When we get down to recruitment in a month or two we will get round to talking about his future But he's an experienced player and he's played at the highest level for a long time. He's a great leader, he's in good form and why would he not want to play on."
