Flannery appeal dismissed

Ireland hooker Jerry Flannery will miss the remainder of the Six Nations after failing in his appeal against a six-week ban for kicking France wing Alexis Palisson.

Flannery was also spared further sanction following a cross-appeal from the Six Nations disciplinary officer, which enabled the committee to increase the length of Flannery's suspension if deemed appropriate. The committee confirmed the original findings in a meeting at a London hotel on Wednesday, endorsing the original sanction.

In his initial hearing Flannery admitted he had deserved a red card for lashing out at Brive wing Palisson in the 33-10 defeat in Paris on February 13, with the France back subsequently limping out of the game with a dead leg. The disciplinary panel found Flannery had been reckless, but not deliberate, in his actions and decided the offence was mid-range in its severity.

Palisson returned to action in France's win over Wales last weekend, scoring an intercept try in a 26-20 win in Cardiff. Flannery's guilty plea and the remorse he showed for Palisson's injury allowed for two weeks to be shaved off the mid-range sanction of eight. Flannery will now miss Ireland's Triple Crown meetings with Wales and Scotland.
