England delivered one of their finest displays to secure an impressive 35-18 victory over Australia in a scintillating clash at Twickenham. Two tries from winger Chris Ashton and a record 25-point haul from fly-half Toby Flood carried the hosts to a deserved victory that secured the Cook Cup and also equalled their biggest-ever winning margin over the Wallabies. Scrum-half Ben Youngs set the tone for an exhilarating display with a Man of the Match performance but his eye-catching contribution was over-shadowed by an outstanding team effort laced with crowd-pleasing ambition. "It didn't resemble a northern hemisphere Test match. England played as if they came from Down Under. Their pace, tempo, work-rate, honesty and guts simply blew the Wallabies away," wrote the Sunday Telegraph's Paul Ackford.

South Africa's Victor Matfield made a record 103rd appearance for the Springboks against Wales in Cardiff and marked the occasion by scoring a try and leading his side to a 29-25 victory. At the other end of the experience spectrum, Wales handed a debut to 18-year-old winger George North who celebrated becoming his country's fourth youngest international with two tries in an assured display that belied his age.

1957
Not to be out-done by their rivals Oxford, Cambridge University beat Australia 13-3 at Grange Road. Oxford beat the tourists the previous week. The game was marred by accusations of dirty play from the tourists with the Times referring to "violent, late and totally unnecessary tackles". The Australians were booed throughout the second half.

2004
Andy Robinson got his reign as England head coach off to a flying start with a convincing 70-0 win against Canada at Twickenham. Jason Robinson marked his first match as captain with a hat-trick, while Mark Cueto scored twice on his debut as England scored 12 tries with no reply. England beat the Springboks 32-16 in the following Test, but results went downhill and they won just two of their 2005 Six Nations matches. Robinson was forced out in November 2006 after losing 13 out of 22 matches in his two years at the helm.

1993
Chester Williams scored a try on his Test debut as South Africa beat Argentina 52-23 in Buenos Aires. Williams went on to score 14 tries for the Springboks in 27 caps, including four against Samoa in a 42-14 win in Johannesburg in 1995.

1983
Rugby's first two Test centurions, Philippe Sella (111 caps for France) and David Campese (101 for Australia), met for the first time in a 15-15 Test draw in Clermont-Ferrand. In his ninth start for the Wallabies, winger Campese kicked five points for the visitors, while for Sella it was his eighth cap.

1906
South Africa beat the South of Scotland 32-5 at Mansfield Park on their first appearance on Scottish soil. Springbok's prolific try scorer Bob Loubser scored a hat-trick.

Spearheaded by the England and Headingley half-backs Dick Auty and Bernard Gadney, Yorkshire maintained their 100% record in the county championship with a 14-0 defeat of Northumberland at Morley.
