Edinburgh and Scotland centre Ben Cairns will not play again this season.

The 26-year-old injured his knee in pre-season training and was forced to undergo the surgeon's knife. And following his return to training in December, he went on to rupture his anterior cruciate ligament.

Unfortunately for Edinburgh and Cairns, he now requires a full reconstruction and will go into surgery once again at the end of the month. He is anticipated to be out of action for eight months and the side hope he will be back for the first match of the 2012-13 season.

Cairns hopes to make a full recovery from his injury and get back to his best. "As a professional athlete I have the scope to dedicate all my time to making sure I come back healthy," Cairns said. "I'm taking the positives from this in that at the end of my recovery my knee will be back to 100% and I'll be in the best shape possible, returning faster, stronger and fitter."
