Shane Howarth, the former All Blacks and Wales fullback, has been drafted in as Wasps' backs coach. The 43-year-old won four caps for New Zealand and 19 for Wales before becoming embroiled in the country's 'Grannygate' saga, having also turned out for Auckland, Newport and Sale. Since his retirement in 2003 he has coached both Auckland and the Blues Super Rugby franchise, as well as the New Zealand Maori. Howarth inherits the role from former Newport-Gwent Dragons boss Paul Turner, whose one-year secondment ended recently. "I have followed Shane's coaching career since I played with him for Wales, and he comes strongly recommended from the likes of Graham Henry," Wasps director of rugby David Young said. "We have a similar philosophy on the game, and I think we will hugely benefit from his intimate knowledge of both the northern and southern hemisphere." © ESPN Sports Media Ltd.
