Clermont Auvergne coach Vern Cotter is reportedly considering an offer to become Scotland's new coach.

Scott Johnson took temporary charge of the national side for this year's Six Nations following the departure of former coach Andy Robinson but his recent promotion to a director of rugby role prompted a fresh search for a suitable candidate.

Scottish Rugby chief executive Mark Dodson recently suggested that they had lined up a replacement with Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder, Reds boss Ewen McKenzie and former All Blacks coach Wayne Smith among those linked with the post. But The Scotsman reports that Cotter has emerged as the preferred choice and the Kiwi is understood to be weighing up the offer.

A Scottish Rugby spokesman declined to comment on the speculation with officials in no rush to make an appointment with Johnson set to continue in charge for this summer's quadrangular tournament in South Africa alongside the Springboks, Samoa and Italy.

The 51-year-old Cotter, whose Clermont side will tackle Toulon in the Heineken Cup final in Dublin on Saturday, was also recently linked to the Ireland coaching position - that eventually went to fellow New Zealander Joe Schmidt - and has previously spoken of his desire to step up to the international stage while insisting the timing had to be right with a year to run on his current Clermont deal.

Cotter's coaching career has included spells at Bay of Plenty and the Crusaders where he worked as an assistant to Robbie Deans. He linked up with Clermont in 2006 and led them to the European Challenge Cup title the following year before landing the Top 14 title in 2010.
