Wales coach Rob Howley has defended Leigh Halfpenny following Mourad Boudjellal's outburst earlier this week where he expressed his frustration at the fullback's injury record.

On Tuesday Boudjellal said he was going to look into whether Halfpenny's groin injury existed before he joined Toulon. He suggested if it was a pre-existing injury then he may look into whether it was possible to cancel his contract.

The news prompted interest from Wales in bringing Halfpenny back but Howley has defended the fullback saying he should be back fit in the next couple of weeks and added he was "flabbergasted" by Boudjellal's comments.

"I spoke to Leigh this week and he was frustrated at not being able to play yet," Howley said. "He said he was looking to be running in straight lines and has two weeks to go before he returned. The following day I was flabbergasted to read Mourad Boudjellal's comments. I could not understand comments like that from a club president when you are looking to create a team environment and culture based on trust and honesty.

"When you sign players you should know what they are about. Leigh is meticulous in his attention and his attention to detail is immense. It is not good when a president comes out and questions whether you were injured when you signed, which is not the case with Leigh. It happened during his rehab from the shoulder operation. I know Toulon have had a tough few weeks and you will be disappointed if you have invested a lot in the club, but I am sure Leigh will be disappointed by these comments."
