Scotland's new captain Grant Gilchrist has suffered a suspected broken arm during Edinburgh's 25-17 European Challenge Cup victory at Murrayfield.

"It looks as if there are hairline fractures in both bones in the forearm. We'll have to wait for the full medical report for a clearer picture," Edinburgh coach Alan Solomons told BBC Scotland.

If Solomons fears are confirmed, Gilchrist is unlikely to be fit to play any part in Scotland's November internationals against Argentina and New Zealand at Murrayfield or Tonga in Kilmarnock. On Tuesday, lock Gilchrist had been named captain of a 33-man squad for the series.

Gilchrist was not the only casualty of Edinburgh's victory, as five of Solomons' players had to be withdrawn in the first 30 minutes. Hamish Watson broke his jaw, Roddy Grant suffered a compressed cheekbone, Phil Burleigh injured his knee and Sam Beard took a knock to the head. To make matters worse, Alasdair Dickinson and Dougie Fife were forced to withdraw with unspecified injuries before kick-off.
