Dan Carter and his wife, Honor, have announced the birth of their second child, with their son's name perhaps a tip towards another famous All Blacks fly-half.

Fox William Carter was born on April 3, "healthy & handsome", the pair announced via their social media accounts on Monday.

The name sparked immediate speculation that he was named after Grant Fox, the All Blacks five-eighth of the 1980s.

Carter, 33, flew home from the Crusaders' trip to South Africa early to be present for the birth.

Honor Carter, a former New Zealand hockey player, and her husband's first child, Marco, was born in 2013.
