Scotland Sevens side granted stay of execution

The Scotland Sevens side will continue to play in the World Series next year but the long-term future of the team is still unclear.

Reports claimed the Sevens side's existence was under threat as World Rugby had taken the Glasgow leg of the series off the roster for next season. Rugby World originally reported the news in early April with just one player under contracted for the 2015-16 campaign but the Scotland Rugby Union has confirmed the Sevens team will be playing in next season's Series.

What remains unclear is whether the players will be on full or part-time contracts but the SRU board confirmed the team will continue to exist in a board meeting on Thursday.

"The positive recent results by the team, heritage of the game in Scotland and incentive of contributing to a future Team GB Olympic 7s squad means Scottish Rugby will continue to support a national 7s team," a SRU statement read. "The current squad and management have today been informed of this decision.

"Discussions will take place with the 7s team and management following the HSBC Sevens World Series tournament in London to plan the structure of the programme for next season."
