Scotland have added back-row forward Blair Cowan to their Rugby World Cup squad as an injury replacement, the Scottish Rugby Union has announced.

The London Irish forward has been called up after Scotland lost lock Grant Gilchrist to injury on Monday.

The SRU announced the move on their official Twitter account, saying: "BREAKING: Back-row @Blair_CowanTC added to @Scotlandteam squad as injury replacement. Welcome aboard Blair!"

Cowan had been a surprise omission from Vern Cotter's initial World Cup squad, having played a full part in Scotland's Six Nations campaign.

The New Zealand-born back-row had been a part of Cotter's training squad but was overlooked as John Hardie made the final cut at his expense.

However, Cowan is now in contention to make his World Cup debut against South Africa on Saturday as the Scots look to cement their place at the top of Pool B.
