Fijian test hooker Greg Smith will now not be joining Edinburgh Reivers for the European Cup, following a "contractual dispute" with the New Zealand RFU.
Reivers' Chief Executive, Nick Oswald has confirmed that they were happy to sign the former Waikato hooker who had satisfactorily completed a medical earlier in the week.
However, with the deadline for player registration for the European Cup fast approaching -
Edinburgh were unable to gain the necessary formal clearance from New Zealand and therefore agreement was reached with Greg to withdraw the contract offer on Wednesday evening.
Oswald received a fax from All Blacks Promotions Limited on Thursday stating that they will not be granting Greg clearance to play rugby in Scotland, citing a "contractual dispute" as the reason.
"Greg is naturally very disappointed as are we with the way things have worked out. We now have to look to the future and identify a third hooker for Edinburgh Reivers to form part of the squad for the European Rugby Cup. I understand that he is returning to New Zealand to pursue the offer of a renewed contract with Waikato," said Oswald
