McLaren drop goal seals Glasgow win
January 6, 2001

Glasgow made it a second win in Wales with centre, James McLaren's late transformation from sinner to saint led to a 16-10 win over Llanelli

The burly McLaren dropped a super left-footed goal seven minutes from the end of a niggling match, after spending 10 minutes in the sin-bin when referee, Clayton Thomas, adjudged him to be the instigator of a mass brawl which involved almost everyone, just before half time.

There was also a yellow card near the end for a second Scot, No 8, Jonathan Petrie, but Glasgow made light of their deficiencies, to be full value for a victory which keeps them in the hunt for the Welsh/Scottish League title.

For slovenly Llanelli, defeat could not have come at a worse time, a week before they resume the Heineken Cup chase in a tough match in Gloucester but they had no one but themselves to blame for a slip-shod showing.

They fell behind 16 minutes into the match when flanker Gordon Simpson scored a classy try for Caley. Tommy Hayes' conversion and a penalty goal soon after meant the Scarlets were left with an uphill struggle they never looked like tackling.

They were not helped by Stephen Jones' poor place kicking. He missed three first half penalty chances but still ended up by bagging all the points from a try, penalty goal and conversion.

His try, 15 minutes into the second half, cut the deficit to three points but McLaren's late strike ensured a double for deserving Glasgow.
