Surprise recall for Mayer
January 12, 2001

Bristol centre Jamie Mayer admits he only found out about his inclusion in the Scotland training squad after a quick glance at Teletext.

Scotland coach Ian McGeechan has drafted Mayer into his squad after the player recovered from the knee injury he suffered against Parma in October. Mayer has been in excellent form since but he admits a change of house could
have cost him dearly with the Six Nations Championship looming on the horizon.

"I'd moved house since the SRU had written to me so I didn't get a letter about today's announcement," said Mayer.
"I just glanced at the TV and saw my name in the squad. It's great news because playing down in Bristol you sometimes think you're forgotten about. This proves the selectors are keeping an eye on players wherever they're
playing. Now it's up to me to show them what I can do face to face. I'm under no illusions that there's a lot of competition for places in the Scottish side, but I'm fit and growing in confidence thanks to what the Bristol squad have been achieving lately."

But Mayer insists he will not be racing back north of the border to enhance his international hopes. "I really enjoy playing my rugby down here with Bristol. It's such a friendly club and I think we can achieve great things,'' said Mayer. I've bought a house down here and I'm settled, so if I could combine playing for Scotland and Bristol that would be ideal."

The Bristol back returns after a series of injuries have hampered his progress over since he made his debut against South Africa two years ago.
