Drink-ban Reiver escapes rugby rap
January 12, 2001

Edinburgh Reivers' captain Don Mackinnon will not face an internal disciplinary hearing after the player was found guilty of a drink driving offence on the eve of tonight's Heineken Cup tie against Leinster in Dublin.

Mackinnon was fined £350 and banned from driving for 12 months, after being
breathalysed and found to be over the legal alcohol limit on 27 December.

Reivers' chief executive Nick Oswald said that, although his club were not condoning drink driving, there was never any danger of Mackinnon missing Friday's crucial match, which finished 34-all at Donnybrook.

It is understood that Mackinnon went out drinking with friends the day after Reivers Welsh/Scottish League match with Glasgow Caledonians was postponed because of poor weather.

The following day, Mackinnon was stopped by police in Edinburgh's Princes Street and found to be over the legal limit.

Oswald said: ``Don has been charged, been to court and been punished. As far as we are concerned, that is the end of the matter.

``He is very remorseful and embarrassed at what has happened. We don't condone what has happened but there was no question in this conflicting with his duties for Edinburgh Reivers.''
