Metcalfe could return for Welsh game
January 15, 2001

Scotland coach Ian McGeechan has revealed that Glenn Metcalfe could be set for a sensational return in the Six Nations clash against Wales.

The Scotland international has barely featured for either Glasgow Caledonians
or the national team since injuring his knee at the start of the summer tour in
New Zealand. But McGeechan believes that the New Zealand-born back could return for the game against the Welsh on February 17.

``He could be playing in the next couple of weeks so I would hope then that he is back to his full potential. It has obviously been a long time out
injured,'' said McGeechan.``He hasn't played but he could be playing in the weekend of the French game and, once you get the match experience, things pick up pretty quickly."

``Look at the impact Martin Leslie has made since he came back, " McGeechan added.``Once you start getting matches under your belt, it all happens very
quickly. If he is playing in the next two weeks ,a lot depends on how he comes through , I would think he could be back in contention for Wales. The Glasgow people say he is on a full fitness programme running and taking contact so he is not far away.''

But McGeechan admits that the return of Metcalfe will be a major boost for his
side. ``It will really help us because he is a quality player and he has been
missing for a lot of games,'' said McGeechan. ``He is a genuine threat as a runner which means, if you have that type of player fit, it adds to your attacking armoury. So the sooner the better to have him back if only to have that choice and know you've got cover which is important for me.''
