SRU continue ticketing initiative
January 18, 2001

The Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) are set to continue their ticketing initiative in the hope that Murrayfield will be full to capacity for their home Six Nations fixtures.

Following the success of the autumn Test series, orchestrated by the union's commercial and marketing director Phil Anderton the SRU yesterday revealed a new range of championship prices, and announced that tickets are to be put on public sale next week.

Anderton told The Scotsman, "It was made clear to me by supporters last year that they wanted better access to tickets - many wanted a public sale - and prices to be more competitive, and so, although filling Murrayfield during the Six Nations is not difficult, we felt it was important to continue to make it as attractive as possible for people to watch the Scottish team.

"The autumn prices and offers were not a one-off, but part of a complete change to the way we market Scotland games. We could have gone out to try and make as much money as possible from the Six Nations Championship, by returning to ticket prices of £35 or over - we could probably have sold tickets to the Wales and Ireland games for £70, to be honest - but would that be for the greater good of Scottish rugby?

"I don't think so. I believe it is vital we look to encourage more and more people to come to Murrayfield - more youngsters and students, for example - while making sure we look after the people committed to the game, the club supporters and debenture holders."

The SRU are set to offer more than 5,000 tickets for the games against Wales (17 February), Italy (17 March) and Ireland (7 April) and these will go on sale to the public from Monday, 9am.

The prices start at £20 for adults and £10 for students and under-18s for the Wales and Ireland fixtures, and are half those figures for the Italy game. In addition, anyone buying a ticket to the Italy match will be entitled to 33 per cent off admission to the autumn Test against New Zealand.

Aiming to ensure that Murrayfield is packed to capacity for the match with Italy, the SRU is also reviving its offer of free coach travel for schools and clubs' youth sections.

Tickets can be purchased online through the SRU website on www.sru.org.uk or through the Ticketmaster credit-card hotline on 0870-444 4221 (booking fee applies). They will also be on sale at the SRU's Ticket Centre at Murrayfield Stadium (entrance via Gate A, off Roseburn Street) which is open Monday to Saturday 9am-5pm. Postal applications can be made to the SRU Ticket Centre, Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh EH12 5PJ.
