Howarth a Scot in 2002
January 26, 2001

Boroughmuir stand-off Calvin Howarth could one day realise his dream to represent Scotland at international level - but not until August 2002.

The 24-year-old New Zealand-born player has been the subject of reports suggesting he becomes qualified to play for the country in November.

But the Scottish Rugby Union today insisted that ``is not the case'' although Howarth has signed a declaration of intent in order to play for Scotland from late next year.

The SRU have been in discussions with both Howarth and his club following new guidelines from the International Rugby Board on eligibility.

These requirements were received just before Christmas and it has been verified that under these IRB regulations Howarth will not meet the three-year residential requirement until August 2002.

Howarth, who has been a permanent resident in Scotland since 16 August 1999, did play for Boroughmuir between November 1998 and April 1999, but then returned to his native homeland for four months.

But he is clearly a star for the future and in his last BT Scotland Premiership outing he surpassed Murray Walkers' club record of 542 league points and he currently stands on a fabulous tally of 551.
