Currie turn tables on Gala
Galashiels
January 27, 2001

Currie boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation from BT Scotland Premiership Division One with a 13-12 win away to Gala.

The visitors gained revenge at Netherdale for their defeat by Gala earlier in the season, also by a single point, thanks in part to two missed penalties in injury time by Gala replacement Bruce Aitchison.

Gala themselves are not safe from the drop, but the bonus point they picked up might yet prove crucial at the end of the season.

Gala missed an early opportunity to take the lead, but Ian Wilson's shot at goal went wide.

Currie made them count for their mess when Mike Duncan was successful with his first penalty effort of the match after Gala were penalised for holding on in the tackle.

The visiting pack gradually forced Gala on to the back foot, and the Maroons needed to stand firm at a couple of dangerous defensive scrums.

Gala then broke out to grab the opening try. After a period of scrappy play, Gala put together a nice handling move. Wilson found Scott Paterson, who took advantage of a large gap in the Currie defence before feeding Mike Elliot for the try at the corner.

Gala didn't have to wait long to extend their lead in the second half. Two minutes after the break, another nice handling move saw flanker John Berthinussen go over between the posts, and Paterson added the conversion.

Currie fought back, and were rewarded when John Shaw drove over between the posts for the score which Duncan converted.

The visitors took the lead just after the hour mark with Duncan's second penalty of the match.

Currie kept Gala pinned back, but were left to hold their breath as Aitchison had two injury time penalty efforts to snatch the points, but both missed the target.
