Muir stay in hunt - BT Premiership round-up
February 18, 2001

Boroughmuir survived a second-half scare to emerge with a bonus point victory and stay in the hunt behind Hawick in the BT Scotland Premiership
title race with a 32-22 win at Kirkcaldy

Muir seemed to be comfortably in control, leading 22-3 at the interval. But Kirkcaldy raised their game after the break, and the visitors' loss of Calvin Howarth to injury contributed to their nervy performance.

Howarth opened the scoring with a simple penalty before Sandy Penman added Muir's first try.

In a crucial two-minute period centre Malcolm Clapperton crossed twice and Howarth added both conversions. Ben Price kicked a penalty for Kirkcaldy but they still looked well out of it.

With Howarth off, the Kirkcaldy pack began to profit, and John Mitchell, Quintin Sanft and Andy Henderson managed second-half tries with Price converting twice.

But Howarth's replacement Alan Sievewright kicked a penalty and converted Tony Dowling's crucial fourth try to make the result and the bonus point safe for the Edinburgh side.

A last-minute try from hooker Chris Docherty gave Glasgow Hawks a bonus-point win in an entertaining 27-22 win at home to Gala.

Hawks went into a 10-0 lead after a fourth minute penalty goal by Stephen Duffy kicked a penalty and then good handling leading to a half break by Cammy Little which let Simon Petrie cross the Gala line with Duffy converting.

But Gala settled into a strong defensive game close to their line and after 12 minutes of the second half the scores were level.

First Gavin Dalgleish worked a loop move for a try converted by Scott Paterson, who soon added a penalty.

With Hawks looking baffled Gala proceeded to take the lead as the best handling move of the match started on the right, was switched on the centre line to the left where replacement winger Greig Crosbie scored a great try.

Hawks regained their focus and seemed to have eased away with tries from Duffy and replacement flanker Grant Howeson inside five minutes, the second of which Duffy converted.

But Gala rallied again and a try from David Boland converted by Paterson seemed to have given both sides what would have been a deserved draw. Then Docherty struck.

In Sunday's other Division One match, Watsonians suffered a 14th consecutive defeat, 21-31 at home to Currie.

'Sonians stand-off Colin Duck and opposite number Mike Duncan exchanged two penalties apiece before Currie conjured the opening try following an excellent break by centre Graeme Moffat. From the well-won territory winger Alex Ramon went over for the unconverted try.

When full-back Murray Thompson finished off a Currie attack by scoring under the posts for Duncan to convert, it looked like another trouncing for the doomed Watsonians.

They dug in, however, striking back with two tries in four minutes from hooker Gordon Dickson and scrum-half Chris Black.

Currie were stung into action once more and a fourth penalty goal from Duncan with eight minutes to go made it safe for the visitors.
