Welsh First Division threaten legal action
February 21, 2001

Wales' First Division clubs are set to take legal action against the Welsh Rugby Union to ensure that the winners of their league are included in the new Celtic League.

The First Division clubs have accused the Union of a lack of dialogue and failing to realise the knock-on effect of its decision to approve nine Welsh teams in the Celtic competition.

Dave Escot, secretary of the First Division clubs, told the Western Mail "We are absolutely incensed. The WRU failed to keep an appointment with us on Monday and now says there is no point in having a meeting.

"I believe the only reason it has gone for nine teams is because Ebbw Vale are in the bottom two. I don't think if it had been Cross Keys and Caerphilly it would have bothered. Our barrister believes there is a clear breach of trade."

WRU secretary Dennis Gethin rejected the accusations, and told the paper, "It was done properly. They had notice of our intentions last August. We have taken legal advice and believe we were entitled to decide there would be no promotion for just one season."
