Six Nations committee play down cancellation fears
March 1, 2001

Six Nations committee chairman Allan Hosie has moved to play down media speculation that this year's Championship will be cancelled due to the spread of the foot-and-mouth disease.

"We are not on the point of cancelling this year's tournament," he told the Daily Telegraph. "Far from it. We are merely being prudent in looking at 'what if' scenarios. Not to do so would be negligent."

"We are aware of all the possible complications, from the Lions tour to the end of season domestic play-offs, when we come to rescheduling matches. But let me emphasise there is no championship gloom and doom from this end. We simply want to be ready for the eventuality."

"At the moment it all looks favourable, but the situation does change by the day. That siad, our feeling is that the championship will be completed."

The Unions meet tomorrow to decide the immediate future of the champinship, in particular England's trip to Ireland on March 24 and Ireland's visit to Scotland on April 7.
