Townsend at centre of McGeechan's plans
March 14, 2001

The decision to release both James McLaren and Alan Bulloch from the Scotland squad for 'A' team duty is a clear indication that Ian McGeechan is intending to start the fit again Gregor Townsend at outside centre against Italy on Saturday.

With Duncan Hodge set to remain at fly half Townsend is likely to resume his centre partnership with John Leslie while Glen Metcalfe is also set for a return to the starting line up on the wing at the expense of Cameron Murray.

McGeechan had considered a revamp at half back with Townsend partnering Bryan Redpath but it seems that Andy Nicol will retain the No.9 shirt and the captaincy, while Hodge will be retained and will again act as the main goal kicker.
