Hawick keep double dream alive
Currie
March 18, 2001
The golden boot of Scotland under-21 outside-half Neil Stenhouse kept Hawick on course for a Scottish league and cup double, after an 18-12 quarter-final win at Currie. Hawick, the BT Scotland Premiership leaders, moved into the last four of the BT Cellnet Cup, where they will play Melrose, as Stenhouse dropped a goal and kicked five penalties. Currie's bright start failed to bring any points and Stenhouse opened the scoring with a penalty in the 17th minute. Currie came back quickly and pressure earned them an opportunity at goal which Mike Duncan accepted to level the score. A drop goal by Stenhouse put Hawick back in the lead but Duncan again tied it with a penalty. As half-time approached Hawick's endeavour had forced Currie to transgress and two penalties by Stenhouse gave the visitors a 12-6 lead. Again Currie came back with Duncan slotting two further penalty goals to level the match. Neither try-line seemed to be in much danger as the game continued apace in midfield, producing interceptions, turnovers and knock-ons galore. A 40 metre kick by Stenhouse put the Greens back in the lead and with minutes to go Stenhouse's fifth penalty seemed to have made the tie safe. Currie launched a final series of attacks at the Hawick post as injury time lengthened, but Hawick kept their line intact. |
