Callander makes date with Watsonians
April 10, 2001

Former Scotland captain Gary Callender is to take over the reigns of Watsonians, as the Myreside team prepare to rebuild for next season, and a quick return to BT Premiership One.

The former Gala player, who won six Scottish caps in the eighties will take up his post on April 14 as the club, who are already relegated, battle for their first league win of the season.

Director of rugby Scott Hastings has also recruited former Scotland A man Darren Burns and Glasgow Caledonians' Martin Waite on two-year contracts.

Callender believes that the Edinburgh club has a bright future despite their current position. "Watsonians have really impressed me with their future vision and I am delighted to be back coaching such a famous club. The fact that I am on board now means that I can have an input into pre-season plans. I am especially delighted that Watsonians have brought in two quality players in Darren and Martin and I am hopeful of attracting more players to Myreside, because I believe the structure that they have in place is second to none."

Watsonians president Mike James believes Callender will bring a new direction to the club. "Gary's leadership will hopefully see us return to the Premiership next season."
