The Barbarians lost their Border League Centenary Celebration Match at the Greenyards on Monday evening, going down 31-24 to a League Select XV in a free-flowing encounter.

The hosts scored five tries to four by their illustrious visitors, who went ahead through Wales full-back Matt Cardey and Graham Shiel's conversion of a try by Phil Graham.

The Borderers fought back with tries from Craig Smith and Iain Fairley, Scotland full-back Chris Paterson converting both to edge the hosts ahead.

A Paterson sidestep saw him claim a third Borderers try himself and he then added the conversion when Scotland wing Cammy Murray rounded off a flowing back move.

After the break veteran Heriot's FP prop Jocky Bryce closed the gap with a close-range try for the Barbarians, Shiel converting.

But, in the closing minutes, Bruce Ruthven wrapped up victory when he claimed the Borderers' fifth and final try.

Alan Studer wrapped up the scoring at the death with the Barbarians' fourth try.
