ARU announce extra seats for Sydney Tests
May 18, 2001

The Australian Rugby Union has announced that a minimum of 6,000 additional temporary seats will be made available at Stadium Australia for the British Lions Test on July 14 and Bledisloe Cup on September 1.

The ARU's official website reported that the temporary seats will be installed at the top of the Northern and Southern end stands, and subject to OCA and building approvals, further seating could be available in the lower bowls in the Eastern and Western stands

If both seating plans go ahead, a minimum of 6,000 seats will go to public sale for the Lions Test. Tickets will go on sale through Ticketek in mid to late June.

ARU Managing Director John O'Neill told the website, "Stadium Australia has worked very hard in coming up with a plan for extra capacity in the face of significant difficulties. The ARU will make a substantial financial contribution to get this seating in.

"Subject to construction timelines, a further 7,000 seats may possibly be commissioned in addition to the additional capacity just announced.

"If work proceeds to schedule and if the Stadium can gain the necessary clearances, bays in the lower bowl could be brought forward in time for the Lions Test. I must stress we are not there yet with this proposal as there are significant logistical and occupational health and safety issues to be resolved."
