Lam to link up with Scotland
May 23, 2001

Newcastle's Samoan World Cup captain Pat Lam is making a surprise step into coaching, with Scotland.

Lam will link up with the Scotland coach, Ian McGeechan - his former boss at Northampton - from next season, when club duties allow.

"I have huge admiration for Pat having worked with him at Northampton. I see him as the perfect role model for players," McGeechan said.

Another part-time appointment by McGeechan is Marty Hulme, the 44-year-old performance director with Sale Sharks.

Hulme will work with the elite group of Scotland players that is set to include established internationalists and promising young talent.

Hulme, who has previous experience with the Great Britain Rugby League side, Wigan RFL, the Auckland Warriors and North Sydney Bears, will look after fitness and strength levels.

"We are going to set world standards as to where the Scotland elite players' fitness and strength levels should be," McGeechan added.
