Summary

Time Score

The referee is Mark Lawrence and Stephen Jones is to kick off for the Lions

1

The ball is taken in by WP and De Waal clears to Kearney. Kicked back and Vermeulen takes the mark. Monye kicks back to Chavhanga who chips into midfield. Ball cleaned up by the Lions

2

It's a bit of aerial ping-pong between Pietersen and now Bowe who kicks it back. De Waal slips but returns the kick. But it's a penalty against Ellis for not retreating from Bowe's kick. De Waal's going for posts.

3 3 - 0

De Waal makes no mistake from straight in front despite the strong wind and the home side take the early lead. WP win that kicking battle then.

4

Van Zyl takes the restart and again it's booted up and taken in by Kearney. Jones puts it up and Pietersen knocks on and Liebenberg takes it in front of him conceding the penalty. Jones to go for poles and it's over. Scores level.

5 3 - 3

Lot's of kicking - to be expected in these conditions. Jones clears the ball from the Lions line and Pietersen can;t take the catch and knocks on. Scrum to the Lions. Should be interesting.

6

Free-kick to the Lions. Harris takes quickly and takes it up. Ball goes right and it's put up in the air and Monye wins it back.

7

Another knck-on and scrum to the Lions just outside the WP 22.

8

The scrum goes straight to ground - it's slippery underfoot. And it goes down again. Lawrence will be patient here I think. Ellis feeds and infringement against WP. No Lawrence won't. Penalty for Jones to go for posts.

9

Jones converts it and the Lions hit the front. Solid start by the Lions.

10 3 - 6

Pietersen takes the restart and it's driven up by Powell. Before it's kicked into the WP half. Bobo can only palm the ball into touch. Scrum to the Lions.

11

Jones takes good flat ball from 1st phase and Pieter Louw is blown up for playing the ball off his feet after making the tackle. Another shot for Jones, although this one is a long way out.

12

Jones' kick falls just under the cross-bar and Pietersen clears the ball with the wind behind him toward the half-way line.

13

O'Callaghan takes at the front of the line-out. Ellis puts it up and Vermeulen takes it in. back to De Waal who kicks deep and centre-field. Kearney returns that with interest though - into the wind. Good kick.

14

WP in their 22 and Duvenhage clears it to the half-way line. It's all the Lions at the moment.

15

O'Callaghan agains and then Vickery who drives into mid-field before being scragged. Ellis again and now Williams but the Lions are being hit back in the tackle.

16

Ellis to Jones who kicks and Pietersen wins a penalty after the Lions infringe at the breakdown.

17

Van Zyl takes the lineout and WP maul forward. Watson's got the ball at the back. Ball goes left to De Waal who hits a snap and a touch wonky drop-goal - and it's over.

18 6 - 6

Lions take the restart quickly and Watson chips forward - but it's too far and Kearney takes a mark.

19

Lineout on half-way and it's skew. Scrum to the Lions. Lenny, the mascot looks on.

20

Poor scrum by the Lions - or is that good scrum WP? Either way it's a turnover and it's WP to feed.

21

De Waal puts it up from the scrum and Kearney takes before knocking it on. Scrum to WP just outside the Lions 22. De Waal has started well.

22

Scrambling in their 22 and Jones kicks the ball awfully. Chavhanga has his hands on the ball - he tries to chip Monye but it goes straight to Monye. Chance missed.

23

Penalty to the Lions in their 22 to bring some relief and Kearney puts it out deep into the WP half.

24

Lineout and the ball is taken into mid-field by the Lions. Jones to Earls in the WP 22 and it's a penalty to WP - this time against the Lions for holding on.

25

From the lineout De Waal cross-kicks and Chavhanga takes acrobatically. De Waal goes for for corner. Bold!

26 9 - 6

WP get the ball off the line-out. It's untidy but they get it back and try to go through the middle. Advantage to WP so Pietersen goes for the obligatory drop-kick. He pops it over and the home side take the lead.

27 9 - 11

TRY! Van Zyl takes another restart and Duvenhage clears. Now Powell takes it on, offloads to Williams and it flies through the hands to Tommy Bowe who takes it at pace and crashes over in the right hand corner despite Duvenhage's attempts to hold him up. It's converted too.

28

It's Powell again off the restart, Lions 22 and cleared by Kearney. Pietersen goes for another drop-goal. Well short though.

29

Van Zyl takes another restart. De Waal kicks deep and it's returned. Chavhanga gets the ball in an inch of space but loses the ball as he goes into touch. Line-out to the Lions.

30

Rees misses his jumper and it goes straight over the top. WP on the attack but Pieter Louw flies off his feet and goes in from the side. Penalty to the Lions and Kearney clears but misses touch.

31

De Waal kicks long, taken in by Monye. Lions - centre-field. It's slow-ball for the Lions and Worseley takes it into mid-field and it's recycled to Flutey. Still Lions ball.

32

Lions come down the right - good phase play this in these conditions.

33

TRY! Tommy Bowe comes off the right wing this time and scythes through the WP backline and then delivers a beautiful soft pass to Monye who glides over. Impressive that. Bowe's nailed on in the test team now - surely. Jones converts Monye's try.

34 9 - 16

Lions are controlling the game now and win a penalty off the restart in their restart.

35 9 - 18

Lions go left off the line-out but get blown for crossing. Chavhanga's taken a heavy knock in tackling Rob Kearney. Will be a hold up here as he's treated.

36

Chavhanga's going off and is to be replaced by the diminutive Gio Aplon - a South African Sevens star. Not the tallest man in the game! Let's hope Chavhanga is OK, he wasn't in a great position as he went in for the tackle and took a blow to the head.

37

Line-out in the Lions 22as the first-half comes to and end. The ball's cleared and then returned before Kearney puts it up in the air. Vermeulen takes the ball what looks like in touch but the linesman doesn't agree.

38

Lions go right and then come left to Monye who is tackled and the Lions lose another turnover at the ruck. Is this a worry for the Lions managment? The breadown that is - not the scoreline.

39

WP kick deep for touch and win the line-out. Then get a penalty for a maul infringement by the Lions. The hooter's gone and De Waal will kick for poles.

40

Two excellent tries then for the Lions in the half as De Waal adds three points for WP. Lions go into half-time with a deserved six point lead.

40+1 12 - 18

de Waal - penalty goal

So the Lions will be looking to improve at the breakdown in particular and be slightly more precise in their kicking game. WP will believe though that they can cause an upset here and their forwards have stood up to the challenge quite well. Pietersen with the restart then and we're underway in the second-half and Bowe takes who feeds Kearney and he clears.

40

Tiaan Liebenberg, formerly of Toulon, feeds the line-out and WP lose it. The Lions go forward and they spill it and the ball gets back to Liebenberg who clears it like a winger. he lacks the pace in the chase though. And the Lions clear it before getting it back and the Lions surge through the middle through Williams and Jones.

41

Monye takes it up and the Lions contest well at a breakdown and win a penalty. Taken quickly before it goes left and is knocked on. Scrum - WP feed and it goes down.

42

Re-set and Lawrence wants the bind up. Good scrum by the Lions who turn it over.

43

Jones goes through the middle and is tackled and the stupidly concede a penalty after Powell takes the ball up and is tackled while Sheridan flops on the ball. that annoys the referee - a lot! Penalty to WP.

44

De Waal's long range penalty falls just short. Newman now with the ball and Worsley knocks on and then concede a penalty for being a mile offside. Silly play this by the Lions. De Waal to shoot for posts again.

45

De Waal sinks this one and the home side creep within three points now.

46

WP clear their lines and Powell is nutmegged by the ball - oops. It's a lineout.

47 15 - 18

The Lions come down the left and Nathan Hines is knocked into touch by Pieter Louw. Hines doesn't like it and let's Louw know.

48

De Waal nails the Lions back into their 22 with an excellent touchfinder. Ball to O'Callaghan at the front and Ellis clears.

49

Here come WP down the right and then after some good movement concede a very soft scrum for a gentle forward pass from De Waal to Wicus Blaauw. Scrum Lions.

50

Monye's away just outside the WP 22 before Vickery crashes forward and is shackled by Watson. Worsley now. It's still there for the Lions.

51

Earls tries to break through the middle and the Lions go left again before WP turn it over. When-oh-when will these Lions learn to protect their ball? Madness.

52

Lions still in the WP half now and Ellis sets it. Vickery drives and they come again before a cross-kick to Bowe who takes and is wrapped up.

53

Ball goes left after a good offload from Hines and Jones gets within 5 letres of the WP try-line.

54

Still with the Lions who are making a series of darts at the line but are still be repelled. Patience though is rewarded as eventually Williams manages to squirm over on the left-hand side.

55 15 - 23

The conversion from Jones is wide. Lions now 8 clear again.

56

Lions look they could pull away here now as they come forward at pace at WP concede a penalty for taking the player out in the air. Penalty and going for the line Jones shockingly kicks it long. My word.

57

Number of replacements now on as WP clear long and Monye takes his time and finds touch.

58

WP ball. Newman takes it up in mid-field and Williams is penalised for coming in from the side. De Waal to have another go at posts.

59

Province keep in touch as de Waal nails another one. That's his sixth. Game on!

60 18 - 23

Province clear long from the restart and the ball comes off Stephen Jones who might not or not have knocked it on. Wayne Barnes - thinks it did so it's a scrum to WP.

61

Scrum goes down and the packs move in-field. all goes right from WP and Aplon goes through. Still WP and they look like they might get over here.

62

Through the middle through a number of phases and now left, beautiful looping pass from de Waal who finds Pietersen on the left who dives over despite the despairing dive of Murray. Very good try.

63 23 - 23

De Waal's conversion goes wide and the scores are level.

64

James hook is off the bench and immediately has a kick for poles from the half-way line. Kearney's off with a dead leg. Big kick this for Hook to make a statement.

65

Short and wide from Hook. Valiant effort thouh. The noise-level from the crowd has gone up a bit.

66

Province ball and Duvenhage clears. Taken in by Bowe who is caught and it's a turnover. Grant kicks and Monye takes a good mark.

67

Lions are losing their composure here, poor kicking and some bad decisions. WP scrum bhut de Waal coughs it up.

68

Lions get their hands on the ball and go through the middle now. Need to keep their hands on the ball for a bit now.

69

Lions attack down the left through Earls who is wrapped up. 10 to go and the game is wide open. Will the Lions winning strreak end in the Newlands rain?

70

No arms in the tackle by Andy Powell in a massive collision with Vermeulen. It's a penalty to WP although the home fans want him binned. Good decision by Lawrence though.

71

de Waal tries a drop-goal from his own half. Genuine attempt or just keeping it in the Lions half. Monye is then blown for not going 5 metres when throwing the ball into a quick line-out. Deep in Lions 22. The replay looks tight, it's a good position for Province.

72

Great scrum from the Lions. Big scrum and they win the turnover off it.

73

The ball cleared into the WP half by Jones with the scores level. It's a free-kick to the Lions who take another scrum - would have thought so after their previous demolition job in the previous one.

74

Penalty at the scrum though to the Lions as JD Moller who's just come on drops his bind twice. Lawrence is on the spot and Hook has a chance to take the lead.

75

Hook belts that in tough conditions and it sails through the posts. Great kick and the Lions hit the front.

76 23 - 26

Province come roaring back and as the ball shifts left there's a forward pass. Chance missed for the home team.

77

Scrum to the Lions in their own half and another penalty to the Lions for Moller dropping his bind.

78

Jones clears deep into WP half and a short line-out is rather skew. Scrum to WP - Province half.

79

Scrum goes down again - the ref needs the binds up. Lions should see this out as the siren goes.

80

Province ball, it goes left and Pietersen bizarrely boots it downfield. Hook gather and clears it to touch. The whistle goes and that's it. Good performance by the home side and the Lions have now won five from five. They've got James Hook to thanks for that excellent long-range effort for them to win the game.
