Bill Hardcastle's two Tests for Australia came in a roundabout fashion. The aggressive flanker had already represented his native New Zealand, in tour games in 1897, before settling in Australia where he continued his rugby career under the banner of the Wallabies.

His first Test came in a defeat against the British Isles in 1899, and he would have to wait four years to get another crack on the international stage. Then it was the All Blacks who visited Sydney, and emerged victorious. Hardcastle's union Test career was over, but he still had something to give.

He began playing the newly-coined rival code of rugby league with the Ipswich club near Brisbane and again won international recognition for Australia, against New Zealand, in 1908.
