Hougaard swapped Welford Road for Vicarage Road at the start of the 2009-10 season and the goalkicking playmaker quickly established his first team credentials.
He brought with him a wealth of talent having been capped eight times by the Springboks and learning his trade with the Blue Bulls in South Africa with whom he won the Super 14 title in 2007.
He followed Bulls coach Heineke Meyer to Leicester Tigers in 2008 but a year in which injury prevented his progress was ended when he decided to leave the Midlands club and sign for Saracens. He shared in Sarries' Premiership Final defeat in 2010 but bounced back to make an impressive start to the following campaign until an Achilles injury sidelined him for several months.
Talented enough to make his debut in Super Rugby for the Bulls as a teenager, he progressed quickly and was included in the Springbok squad for the 2003 World Cup, making his debut as a replacement in the win over Uruguay in 2003. He also came off the bench in the defeat by England before being promoted to the starting line-up for the clashes with Georgia, Samoa and New Zealand.
Hougaard played one more game for his country that year before being discarded until the summer of 2007, when he was recalled for games against Samoa, Australia and New Zealand. However, he has not featured for the Boks since leaving his homeland for Leicester in 2008.
